Why You Shouldn’t Rent An Office
It’s an age old discussion, whats better working at home or working at an office if your an entrepreneur with no employees? Working at home has tons of advantages but overall can and will usually make you lazy and unproductive due to less social activity and distractions. Where as working in an office involves time wasting commuting, $ for unnecessary rent, and most people will resort back to working at home in a couple months time anyways. So instead of doing that, let this post help you get your act together.
So your slacking by working at home and your considering renting an office?
I can only tell you one thing, man up and organize your life. I was considering an office for 2 years, and never actually did it, it took me 2 years to fully organize myself, and really setup proper schedules that keep me productive.
Scrap the idea of an outside office and lets discuss what you need to do to organize your ‘at home office’ so distractions are out, and productivity is in.
Block Everyone Who’s Distracting You
- Turn your phone off
- Block your girlfriends cell #
- Block your AMs on AIM
- Put 10 deadbolts on your office door
Your not working at home to do favours for people, so ignore them, or just tell them NO.
Live/Work As If You We’re In An Office
You don’t have to wear a suit, but at least get dressed. You’ll be more focused! Eat 3 meals a deal, throw in some daily exercise, use the phone sometimes, take breaks etc.. If you do all of these things your environment will be more focused, and less stressed.
Organizing Your Home Office For Max Productivity
It’s simply about doing. That’s all that it comes down to. It’s about treating your home office as a real office with a real daily regimen (for the most part). There will always be distractions, but focus on why your trying to make $ in the first place and you’ll start to focus more on your work. Don’t trick yourself into thinking an office will change anything, it’s all about your organization, discipline and attitude!
3 Main Downsides Of Renting
- Loss of $600 – $1200/month
- Likely it’ll be a shared space or a closet size office, both are brutal
- Commuting
Take Advantage Of The Work At Home Advantages!
Working at home has a TON of benefits if you work hard, and don’t slack.
- Sleep In!
- Do something no one else can do at 2pm!
- Take full days off, because you can!

Images are from this hilarious TheOatmeal comic discussing the pros/cons of working from home.

Exactly! Im in my own apartment, I get shit done!
Dino is busy commenting on peoples blogs!
but yeah. i can’t get shit done at home so i just go to a cafe. i become much more productive.
The home office route will turn out to be more effective for someone that is very focused/ disciplined because if care is not taken, with all the comfort and distraction of a ill planned home office, one will not get anything done.
freaking love that comic lol..
Def get into a gym/workout routine. I put mine mid day and I had so much more energy to push through the rest of the day.
I worked from home for years. It’s cool in a lot of ways. But when I started making over $10k a month nearly a decade ago I got an office.
Why?
Because I found out that I had enough money to expand what I was doing and to make several other ideas work. But to do that most effectively you need to HIRE PEOPLE. When you have office space to fill out you would be amazed at how much you are motivated to quickly find people that can help expand the company.
There’s one thing that you have to remember though, the best people don’t want to work at your house. You need to look professional and have a place that they can feel good about coming into every day.
So, work from home for a while, but when it’s time to kick it up a notch, don’t think twice about getting an office. Just do it.
No contest there, if your expanding with local employees THEN it’s definitely time to upgrade to an office.
PB , ur right man … most of us will have to struggle that way
That comic had me. You can also travel and work while vacationing.
Its difficult to scale to big revenue working by yourself from home.
It’s fine when you’re doing 5k-10k or even maybe 15k a month in consulting or maybe affiliate stuff.
But if youre running a real business that is scaling, i.e. heading towards 100k, 250k per month, there’s no way you can do that by yourself effectively and definitely not from your bedroom/kitchen table or even home office.
Bravo for this post! I work at home on my laptop and it feels good. Better than going to an office.
Working from home is hard, but if your serious about your business you’ll get it done. The article and some posts explained it well.
I started working from my detached garage after a failed business venture 6 years ago. It wasn’t bad, but I didn’t act like I didn’t have to go to work. I had to work that much harder to get myself motivated.
I woke up early, breakfast, gym, shower, changed and was at my desk with a cup of coffee ready to go by 9am Monday-Friday. I would review my to-do list that I put together and printed out the night prior, so I wouldn’t skip a beat and wouldn’t be all over the place.
You must set up a schedule for yourself.
Lunch time I went out or ate outside of office, with biz phone off.
Know when to shut down your day too, b/c you might get stuck not knowing home from the office.
After 12mth of working hard from home, I plateaud, business was doing well, but I couldn’t increase my sales without sacrificing customer service and bottom line. It was time for an office so I could hire help.
Working from home is great for starting up or even for people who are content making there 100k-200k a year. But to expand your business and build a business, you need to hire. It’s preference.
Lots of Anthony Robbins and zig ziggler morning tweets kept me going. Good luck
Working from home may work for some, but I’m really looking forward to getting an office soon. I live in a small 2 bedroom house with my girlfriend and her 4 year old. Trying to get anything done with them around is near impossible. Maybe if we had a bigger place with an extra room for an office it would work out, but not with my setup. Looking forward to having a space that I can call my own and work in peace
Plus I live in a small city and have found a small but awesome location downtown with good eats within walking distance for just a little over $200/month and only a couple minutes walk or drive from our house.
I’m just getting started in Affiliate Marketing though, so waiting to get started and see some income first.
