The End Of Facebook Ads For Affiliates?
This post title is not an exaggeration. Affiliates may see a huge blow from Facebook in the next few months.
The Issue
Facebook may be replacing Keyword Targeting with Category Targeting. Meaning you can’t target people who like “Kobe Bryant”, instead you can only target “Basketball”. I don’t know the extent of the category targeting, i’m sure decently deep targeting will be available, but it absolutely will have a big negative impact on affiliates who use Facebook Ads.
Over the last month a limited group of Facebook advertisers (chosen at random) have had there keyword targeting completely removed, and replaced with category targeting. This is a very unusual way of testing out a new website feature, especially for paying advertisers.
“In an email to AllFacebook.com, Facebook’s Online Operations Team explains that the test among a limited set of advertisers uses “Broad Category” targeting “rather than individual targeting criteria -
While Facebook says this will make it “easier” for advertisers to reach their desired audience, it takes away the ability to drill down within categories. Many see this as a step backwards.”

What Does This Mean For Affiliates?
Overall it means your laser targeted campaigns (how many make great ROI from facebook) will be no longer. The ability to target trends, celebs, and many other specific things will be gone and you’ll have to adapt to targeting categories only. This will mean more people who aren’t interested in your ad will be seeing your ad whether you like it or not. Which usually will = lower CTR and conversion rates. Affiliates will have to adapt and think of how to use categories to their benefit.
Here’s Whats Forsure
- Facebook has chosen random accounts and replaced their keyword targeting options with category targeting options
- You can’t opt out if your account is seeing category targeting
- There has not been word whether they will be rolling out category targeting 100%, or if it will replace keyword targeting
Speculations
- They may remove keyword targeting altogether, It’s widely speculated this will be the case.
- Facebook may offer ‘keyword targeting’ to advertisers who hit a threshold of $30k+/month in spending.
Why Introduce Category Targeting
The main reason is it makes advertising easier for small businesses and that’s Facebook target client. Facebook wants small local businesses to advertise on their system, not affiliates. In the past small businesses would often skip keyword targeting because it’s way above their heads, but with category targeting it’s simplified for them to use.
Category targeting may open up some new opportunity’s for affiliates. I can already think of a few, but if keyword targeting is taken away completely then there are a lot more downsides to all of this.
It’s not a question of whether Facebook is introducing category targeting, it’s a question of if they’re taking away keyword targeting.

I have in my account, the choice to choose either – Precise Interests or Switch to Broad Category Targeting.
Can you take a screenshot for me? I know 2 people stuck with only category targeting.
Shoot me an email. and I’ll send you the screenshots.
I don’t see this affecting my own campaigns.
Many of my Facebook campaigns don’t even use keywords. So as is usually the case…”If it harms some, it’ll help others”
I think category listings should be more than enough for people to work with, albeit while taking a hit to their CTRs.
FUCK YOU!
Grow up.
FUCK YOU TOO!
Easy there killer
So why is it a major issue whether the advertiser is a small business or an affiliate?
End of the day i see both the same as one another and they probably take in more from affiliates than “small business’” long term. Surely they would rather see an affiliate spending $1000 per day than a “small business” spending $100 per day?
It seem’s odd that they would rid of it altogether but i guess we are talking fb here, unpredictable.
They’d prefer the brand advertiser and the local business person, probably because
(A) they tend not to push the limits as much as affiliates
(B) they don’t have the same expectations for a positive ROI.
more sheeple = more profit
Yeah i know they tend to sway towards more brand awareness and small business companies BUT end of the day would you rather see a small company spend 200 a day or an affiliate spend 2000 a day?
I may be wrong but i’d be favouring the bigger daily spenders rather than the small business because they will still expect roi not like the big big companies who shell out just on brand. They try it and hate it and never go back.
I can’t recall any change that FB has implemented that favored affiliates at all.
Fortunately I still have my keyword targeting, gotta build as many keyword campaigns as I can before it’s taken away!
They never will and i dont understand why, i mean i know pages plastered in dating ads is sometimes a pain but pages plastered in companies we see on the tv day in day out a pain
They dont profit much from small business only the massive companies splashing huge on cpm for brand awareness so i dont see what they are thinking.
They are just being more strict and pain in the ass for us. But yeah.. must run and built as many keywords campaigns as we can before they get taken away
CPV FTW!
Ok facebook ads quality will be going down the drainage as adbrite now.
Its time we look into the hidden hacks in facebook update.
Facebook may offer ‘keyword targeting’ to advertisers who hit a threshold of $30k+/month in spending.
I’m sure something like this will be what they will impliment.
so basically they are becoming more similar to MypaceADs (only the traffic won’t suck as much) Can’t say that I like this and hopefully they’ll keep the keyword targeting options.
I think if they do move forward and make the change affiliates or any business that want’s to be successful with FB ads is going to have to focus on.
-more testing of adcopy and images. Won’t be able to rely on just using a keyword in your headline for an instant CTR boost.
-more use of geo-targeting even if its a broad campaign.
-better and more effective use of options like workplaces, colleges, etc. to hone in on a demographic.
overall just more thorough demographic research is going to be the key, but I’m still a little dumbfounded that they would attempt to take such a step backwards and consider getting rid of the tool that makes them such a good ad platform and separates them from being just another generic place to buy media.
The best campaigns I’ve seen never used keywords. It’s very hard to get huge volume like 10k a day revenue when laser targeting keywords. This new targeting will help affiliates who run offers for more general demographics that are looking for more volume.
I have a friend who has the Category choice, but he has the same facebook ad tool, and is still able to use keyword advertising. It’s interesting how even though his account doesn’t have it, he still is able to do it with the facebook ad tool we both use.
Have any of you noticed how only 1 campaign now gets all the traffic? I don’t think it’s only me.
It doesn’t make sense for FB to roll out a test of this to only a few people if they were going to make this the only option available going forward. If this were the case, they would simply implement the change now to everyone.
In short, I truly believe this will only be an option for advertisers and keyword targeting will still be available to those who want to use that instead.
