Results From A John Chow Guest Post?
Your guest posting on JohnChow’s blog? You should expect it to be pretty great right? He’s one of the biggest bloggers in the online marketing space. The results were not what i expected!
My blog post was a very in depth case study comparing the quality of clicks and CTR between the CPC and CPM bidding model on Facebook. Does CPC yield a higher CTR and better conversions then CPM bidding? This is what i was testing.
The guest post went live on JohnChow Tuesday Nov 16th at 10am eastern time. 2 more post were added above my case study by 2pm:
- The Beatles Come To iTunes, Amazon.com Fires Back
- Upgrading the iMac Memory from 4GB to 16GB
I can’t believe these post overshadowed my case study! It took a couple hours to compile this data and write the post… Also it’s a case study based around a question many people wanted the answer to.
I got a pretty bad plug at the end of my post, it’s practically hidden. Dark grey text on top of a light grey box yields terrible CTR!!!
Results
- 17 Clicks (28 hours in)
- 07:27 (which is pretty high, can’t complain about this)
In the end I’m not happy with this experience. Guest posting should work well for both parties.

Wow thanks for the info… try some less active blogs like
tylercruz.com
zacjohnson.com
since they post like once a week.
I agree with Raj. Probably hit or miss guest posting on his blog.
I was lucky enough to guest post on ppvplaybook’s blog and that was good long term traffic.
Sorry to hear that man. It was an excellent case study and well written. That said, it probably went WAY over the top of most of his readers. I think they’re probably looking for more instant press 1 button, do nothing and make loads of money sort of postings.
In my mind the two best blogs in town are finchsells and mrgreen.am, but I’d imagine people who are eyeballing them have already started following your stuff.
Unfortunately for you your post was probably ignored because 99% of his readers are complete fucking idiots who don’t know jack shit about online marketing.
for example from the first comment on your post…
Complete retard – “Well its sad to see people pay for traffic when this stuff is free online, I just think people should keep their money and focus on Seo if they can.”
^Took the words right out of my mouth
wow, agreed. jaw droopingly ignorant comment
fuck yes.
Hahaha, i 100% agree. I understood this when posting, but didn’t realize how bad it would be. When i was reading the comments i had a WTF face on the whole time.
Haha, you should write guest post on Mr Green blog.
Yes, Mr. Chew and his readers aren’t looking for case studies.
They are more interested:
1) Seeing Mr. Chew carelessly unboxing a monitor and leaving a big knife around for his daughter Mini-Chew to get cut up with.
2) Seeing Mr. Chew take professional stock-photography of 5oz steaks, only a true Dot-com millionaire can afford, on special occasions.
3) Useless posts about The Beatles 900th remastered CD collection that you MUST buy at amazon through his affiliate link.
4) What synonyms will Mr. Chew use this week to make his “How to be a Super-Blogger like Mr Chew” post appear unique.
well for what its worth you did a VERY good case study.
i know it gave me a new mindset to think with.
especially when seeing the what i would normally call “poor” CTR CPM ads still wind up with much lower click costs then the CPC campaigns.
as mentioned many times above.. bunch of newbs and dumbasses who can’t see the value.
If it’s any consolation I read your post at John Chow and then came over here and added your RSS feed to my reader – so you gained one fan. Your post was good and that’s becoming rare on JC.com.
I’m sort of with most of the comments here, I’m spending less and less time reading the so called famous make money bloggers and more time trying to find people who are actually sharing some useful information. So far your site seems very useful. I think blogging is still fairly new and I can’t believe JC will last much longer as he really offers very little value through his blog.
Someone mentioned Finch Sells above – I started reading him, as well. He’s funny and usually does have some interesting, useful stuff. I also recently started reading viper Chill – he’s got lots of real useful information, too.
Hey, i’ve also found you via JC.
You have a great blog
Please keep writing I actually found it very useful, as I’ve just started with FB ads.
I’ve paid JC for a review, and was very disappointed with the results from his blog as well.
Will you still follow up with your Part 2 on his blog? If not, please put it up on your own….looking forward to the results!
Yep i will be
yeah, post it on your blog. not on JC’s.
Well if anything you have that backlink from a highly popular PR5 online a moneymaking blog. That will surely help you out in the SERPs sooner or later.
you got owned brah
If you want to get a response from John Chow’s crowd the title should have been something like “How To Become A Multi-Millionaire At The End of The Week By Using Ezine Articles” then charge $97 for the ebook and profit. I doubt any of those people advertise anywhere.
Well, at least you got a nice link from a big domain. Should have thrown some anchor txt in it sh** though.
Pretty lame that Chow hustled you like that. He could of at least let your post shine for 24-48 hours
Well, I am here because of that John Chow post, and I find your site 10x more valuable than his. (I really don’t get who wants to watch his kid put in ram, or watch John pack his coat in a travel bag!) Thanks for adding real value!
All part of the game.
That is disappointing. I am big JC fan, I am not sure if the post resonated with the audience.
Remind me to tell you about the time I paid $500 for an official John Chow Review.
….maybe Part 2 will be in StackThatMoney Private Forums?
Guest blogging is tough these days, you don’t get much back for a lot of work, but it’s still effective when you get a knock out post on a good blog.
For blogs like John Chow’s blog, I would rather send in some “good” content to be guest post and save some “great” content for better blogs.
Good read by the way.
